U.S. Department of Transportation Rural Safety Innovation Program
DOT logoThe goal of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Rural Safety Innovation Program is to improve rural road safety by assisting rural communities in addressing highway safety problems and by providing rural communities the opportunity to compete for project funding to address these problems. The program will encourage States and rural communities to develop creative, locally crafted solutions to roadway safety problems, document their efforts and outcomes, and share the results with other communities across the country. LEITSCThe Law Enforcement Information Technology Standards Council Releases Standard Functional Specifications for Law Enforcement Records Management Systems, Version II
With support from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), the Law Enforcement Information Technology Standards Council (LEITSC) is pleased to announce the publication of Standard Functional Specifications for Law Enforcement Records Management Systems, Version II. These standard functional specifications are intended to be used as a starting point to build, based on agency needs, a fully operative records management system that is based on open standards in order to efficiently interface and share information with other systems both internally and externally. US DOT Releases Next Generation 9-1-1 Preliminary Transition Guidelines
The U.S. Department of Transportation has released The Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) Preliminary Guidelines. This Preliminary Transition Plan is intended to help frame how the government and industry view the deployment of NG9-1-1 and the key decisions that might need to be made by each level of government and the private sector to make implementation a reality. 32nd LEIM Conference

2008 LEIM Section Annual Conference (Information Update - May 1, 2008)
The IACP's Law Enforcement Information Management (LEIM) Section, will hold its 32nd Annual Conference at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, TN, May 6-10, 2008. Proposed topics to be discussed include: System Integration, Strategic Planning, Mobile Computing, Terrorism and Technology, and IT Standards. U.S. Department of Transportation Launches Rural Safety Initiative
DOT logoSecretary Mary Peters announced the launch of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Rural Safety Initiative. This targeted, national effort will help raise awareness of the risks drivers face on America’s rural roads. The initiative will support States in improving rural road safety by highlighting available tools and programs, and it will provide assistance and encourage demonstrations of innovative, quick and effective leveraging of existing resources. This new endeavor will be multi-modal and comprehensive in addressing five key goals: safer drivers, better roads, smarter roads, better trained emergency responders, and improved outreach and partnerships. U.S. Department of Transportation Announces Partnerships for Next Generation 9-1-1- Initiative Proof of Concept
NG 911 logoThe U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) has announced the selection of Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) to participate in the Proof of Concept (POC) portion of the Next Generation 9-1-1 Initiative project. The selected PSAPs are:

  • City of Rochester – Emergency Communications Department, Rochester, NY
  • King County E-911 System, Seattle, WA
  • Metropolitan Emergency Services Board – Ramsey Co. Emergency Communications Center, St. Paul, MN
  • State of Montana – Public Safety Services Bureau, Helena, MT
  • State of Indiana - Office of State Treasurer, Indiana Wireless 911 Board

The objective of this Proof of Concept (POC) is to test specific requirements, selected from a prioritized list developed by the NG9-1-1 team with input from a variety of 9-1-1 stakeholders. The NG9-1-1 POC is expected to begin in April 2008 and will last approximately three to six months. Following completion, data gathered during the POC will be analyzed and used to revise the system architecture and complete the transition plan. U.S. Department of Transportation Seeks Technology Solutions to Improve Safety and Reduce Congestion on Nation's Roadways
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) today issued a request for information (RFI) to private industry, research organizations, and state and local governments seeking information about commercially available technology applications designed to fight congestion and improve the safety and performance of the nation’s transportation system. Computer Based Training for Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Collision Investigation
Among the most difficult accident situations for police agencies to investigate are those involving railed trains and vehicles, which most often occur at rail crossings. In order to provide training and assistance to investigators of such accidents, the IACP Foundation has funded a training CD-Rom with 15 specific training modules for police forces. IACP Highway Safety Committee/(ETATS) Publishes Red Light Camera System Performance Specifications
These Red Light Camera Systems Minimum Performance Specifications have been created cooperatively with IACP law enforcement membership, industry professionals and scientific academia to provide comprehensive minimum performance specifications recommendations.
